As I listened to the following, I counted all those of us who had served both by joining the military and by sitting home and waiting for those who went in harm’s way.

Gustavson Family members who served in the U.S.military.
Here are the ones I (Dick Gustavson) came up with:

Don Gustavson, US Army, Korea (a long time ago – Late 1960’s)
Dick Gustavson, US Navy, (not so long ago Until 2007)
Ralph Gustavson, US Army, Vietnam (a long time ago Early 1970’s)
Brian Gustavson, US Navy, (not so long ago for five years after US NAVAL ACADEMY Graduation in 1998)
Jennifer Ranous Rodgers, US Air Force, (not so long ago Until 2007)
Thuy Bayer, US Army (not so long ago Until late 1990’s)
Billy Rogers
, US Army, (still serving December 2008)
Kyle Ranous, US Army, (still serving December 2008)

And then there are the “Mom’s”:
Pat Ranous – triple Blue Star Mom
Grandma – triple Blue Star Mom and quadruple Blue Star Grandma

December 2, 2008 Kyle Ranous arrived in California on leave from his base in Germany where he is now stationed following a 15 month tour of duty in Iraq. He will visit friends and family in California and Colorado before returning to Germany January 2, 2009.

Nancy is staying at a hotel in Seattle. Nancy had been having a cough for several weeks/months, so she went to see her doctor in Sitka for treatment. She received a chest x-ray and after a follow up CT scan was immediately sent to Seattle where chemotherapy was started. She has just had her second dose. Apparently she has been doing very well with that and the doctors have had encouraging reports for her in that they believe she is in otherwise good health, which should make her treatment more tolerable.

She has had an MRI of her brain and that was negative. The doctors are saying there is no evidence of cancer in any major organs, and they remain very encouraging and optimistic. This is the information we are hearing from Nancy.

Nancy would love to receive letters and calls, though she did state to me that it was taxing on her to rehash her health issues over and over again. She is a bit concerned about being out in public as the chemotherapy decreases her immunity.

Her address in Seattle is: Baroness Hotel
Room 304
1005 Spring St
Seattle, WA 98104

November 20, 2008 Email from Phil Gustavson re Nancy Gustavson illness
Nancy is having a bout with Cancer in her lungs and spread a bit. She reports she is undergoing chemotherapy in Seattle (Miriam may be in contact). She says she is tolerating the chemicals ok, but the second treatment yesterday took five hours.
She’s being pretty low-key about it but I think it is pretty bad from what she has told me and my research. She will need lots of prayers and a miracle or two.
Jerry is there and back to Sitka, leaving her to fend, i.e. get bored. Lesley has sent books. Treatment is at Swedish Hospital, and she is staying at a residence hotel nearby. I think she said there will be several “three-week”treatments over several months, so lots of opportunity for her to visit/stay with Miriam maybe.

kyle has safely completed his 15 month tour of duty in Iraq and is now in Germany with intent to be home (in California) by early December before his next assignment which is believed to be Fort Benning in Georgia USA

Ralph (Tonseth) graduated from Azusa HS (in 1960).

There were 600 people at the reunion (October 18th) so it was hard to connect with any classmates!
Totally disorganized! They invited students from 10 yrs and thought they would only have 300 people! They had an overflow crowd and a Mexican buffet for $60 each!
Nice location though. Ralph was hoping to connect to friends but they weren’t there.
His sister was supposedly there but we never found her. Reunion’s are always interesting.

UCLA Bruins have a leg up

Punter Aaron Perez averaged 46.8 yards per kick in UCLA’s opening-game victory over Tennessee, giving the Bruins an advantage in field position.
They’d rather punt the ball than turn it over, making Aaron Perez a major weapon.

You punt. You win.

As coaching rhetoric goes, this hardly ranks with “win one for the Gipper.” Still, UCLA Coach Rick Neuheisel has gone about convincing his team that sending punter Aaron Perez onto the field is not crying uncle.

That was an integral part of the game plan against Tennessee in the opener. Perez averaged 46.8 yards a punt in the 27-24 victory, two that covered 55 yards.

This might not provide scintillating talk radio fodder, or make the cut on the highlight-reel editing, but to hear Neuheisel preach, this is football gospel.

“It’s imperative that we make it a long field,” Neuheisel said. “With Aaron Perez and his leg, we can do that. As we grow in terms of our explosiveness and our ability to run the ball, we’ve got to be mindful of field position. So punting is not a bad thing.”

Perez never thought so.

He has been at it for eight years now, ever since a friend called him a week before freshman football season started for Covina Charter Oak High.

“He knew I was a good soccer player and said, ‘Come out and kick for us,’ ” Perez said. “The first game I played in was the first time I was ever at a football game. Three games later, I was on the varsity.”

Perez attacks his new hobby with the same competitive, obsessive style he reserves for video games.

“He can be obsessive,” said Bruins long snapper Christian Yount, one of Perez’s close friends. “The guy was once ranked No. 1 in the world at the FIFA online video game because he played it constantly. He’s obsessive about ketchup. He puts it on everything. I’ve seen him ruin some good meals by putting ungodly amounts of ketchup on it.”

That attitude prevented Perez from being satisfied with merely earning a scholarship.

He has improved considerably from his redshirt freshman season, when he averaged 39.9 yards. Perez averaged 42.3 last season, ranking him second in the Pacific 10 Conference. He also dropped 35 kicks inside the 20-yard line.

“Right now, he has the tools, but he has to be more consistent,” said Frank Gansz Jr., the Bruins’ special teams coach. “You can have a 55-yarder down the middle of the field with no hang time. That will look good on the stats, but they are hard to cover.”

Perez had a 55-yard punt that pinned Tennessee deep in its own territory. He also had a 55-yard punt returned 33 yards.

“I tell him all the time, it’s not the good ones,” Gansz said. “They won’t remember those. They are going to remember the bad ones. You have to eliminate the bad ones.”

Actually, it’s a “good one” people remember. Perez put the final boot into UCLA’s 13-9 upset of USC in 2006 with a 63-yard punt that took 11 seconds off the clock and left the Trojans on their own seven with four seconds left.

“He is serious about his punting,” said defensive tackle Brigham Harwell, who shared an apartment with Perez. “One time, one of the guys said something about his punting game and Aaron started getting mad. He walked out of the dorm room, pouting.”

August 25, 2008 Kyle Ranous confirms that his unit has been assigned to Mosul, Iraq. The London Financial Times reports that the remnants of al-Queda (about 1,200 down from an estimated 12,000) has grouped in Mosul. Kyle’s tour of duty in Iraq is scheduled to end November 2008.

Dear Gustavson Cousins
It is with a sad heart that I share this news with you (Vickii has given me permission to do this). Our Cindy (Vickii’s daughter) is with the Lord now after many months of fighting gall bladder cancer. This is a rare cancer that was discovered when they were going to remove her gall bladder and it had already spread to her liver and other areas. She was at Doctors Medical Center this last week with a blood infection and many other things wrong when she died at 7:15 am on Friday, August 29.
She had many people that love her around her during that time and we knew her grandparents would be waiting for her (Arlene and Hector Bouttier) with open arms.
Cindy was never alone as her mother stayed with her after her surgery in January. She never went home to Oregon but stayed by her daughter’s side. They had such a closeness and love during this ordeal and Vickii said it was a blessing to be with her daughter all those months. It was only thru the supernatural strength that the Lord gave her that she was able to do this. Cindy had such courage and grace during this time as she quietly fought this battle. She always welcomed visitors and seem to enjoy the company even though she was not feeling well.
Her service will be next Sat. 9/6 at the Big Valley Grace Community Church in Modesto at 2 p.m. Vickii will be returning to Oregon after the service so if you want to send cards or call use her Oregon address. It is: Vickii and Don Yeats, 79349 Repsleger Rd, Cottage Grove, OR 97424. 541-767-3661.
You can contact me if you have any questions. Vickii can be reached by her cell phone and I will be seeing her and Don this week. Cindy owned a home in Modesto they will be closing before returning to Oregon. Thank you so much for all your prayers and cards they so appreciated receiving them in the mail!
Uncle Gene would you mind putting this on the family website. Don’t put this on the chat room. I’m going to put a shorter version with Cindy’s picture on that site. Thanks.
Your Cousin and Cindy’s Aunt Carol Bouttier Tonseth
Today my doctor’s nurse, Leona called and after several phone calls finally got the ball rolling.
I had also called Jim, my Humana Insurance person, and he was on the phone several times. The mail order place were my medication will come from should call me tomorrow and give me some info.
It has taken so long that my prescription order had expired so Leona issued another one. Then Jim had called her and said she had to notify my insurance to say, yes, I needed Revlimid 25g. which is an average dose. She then called them and they gave their approval. Now are you ready for this??? My co-pay will be around $5000 for the first month. My insurance will then kick in and it will only be $350 for Sept. & Oct., the next two months. Can you imagine? Then I get tested and they will know how I am responding. I could have to keep taking it. Leona told them I will need assistance in paying for this so she got that ball rolling. That’s a prayer request. I asked…well, what happens if I don’t take the pills? My kidneys will eventually be affected and shut down. (I told her, “I will take the pills.”)
I know some of you receiving this will know exactly what I am writing about. Some of you have been through so much worse and I really appreciate that you can still pray for me.
Things are improving every day with these horrible diseases and I have to be thankful that they do have such drugs. They have pulled Ernie through Pneumonia many times and the drugs were very reasonable. I have to be thankful that they can help me. I do have a fear that the medication for the Revlimid will alter my moods. (Oh, what Ernie might be in for!) I will put up a fight and God has got my full attention. I like to think that “I” can handle anything… (wrong)
Wow! I am so fortunate to have so many people pulling for me and I really appreciate each one of you praying. Too many times we think we don’t need each other and take each other for granted. I am sending this with a lot of love. God bless you in a mighty way. I know He has me.
Lots of hugs,
Bev
Nothing has changed since I first wrote. My medication still hasn’t arrived and my doctor’s nurse is trying to find out where it is. I wanted to go out for Mexican food last night and I didn’t know what affect it would have on me with the medication. Well, I didn’t get it and I had a great dinner!
I have Multiple Myeloma. It is a cancer of the plasma cell, is an incurable but treatable disease.
I will be taking Revlimid for 21 days and then I get a week off.
I am also taking Dexamethasone tablets 2 mg. daily for 4 weeks. Starts with 2 tabs for 7 days and then decreases to none. Promethazine 25 mg. for nausea if I need it.
I will need weekly blood tests.
I will see my cancer doctor in a month after taking the medication and see how my body is reacting. We have no idea of the cost. We have Humana as Primary and I guess Medicare as a secondary.
I do believe in miracles and am praying for one…please remember my family and friends. God is giving me total peace of mind and I know he is watching over me. Thank you so much for your prayers.
There is a lot of information on the Internet if you are interested. That is why I gave you the information about my medication. I have looked up some of the stuff but don’t want too much info. either. What did we do before the Internet?
